More specifically, shots from the trail to Spruce Flats Falls in the Smoky Mountains. It’s not a long hike, though the terrain is somewhat challenging with several changes in elevation. Nevertheless, the falls are beautiful so it’s definitely worth the effort! Follow this path through the forest to an expansive view from the top of Black Mountain, located in Crab Orchard, Tennessee. Sitting on the caprock, you’ll have an eastern exposure of the Smoky Mountains in the distance.

This creative and surreal fantasy landscape featuring an infinite array of staggered, rocky peaks, reminded me of the 1986 movie, The Golden Child, when Eddie Murphy was tasked with the death-defying feat of carrying a glass of water (without spilling) across a similar, dangerous terrain. This photograph of steps leading along a trail into the forest was shot at Piney Falls, located near Spencer, Tennessee, in the Falls Creek Falls State Park. Prints available.
Pursue some path, however narrow and crooked, in which you can walk with love and reverence.
Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.
On The Trail
I photographed this black and white landscape scene while hiking in the Cherokee National Forest, along the trail to Falls Branch Falls. This chaotic collection of roots belonged to a single tree.
