Trailhead Footbridge

A few miles further into the Smoky Mountains beyond the Old Wooden Bridge, at the end of a dirt road, visitors arrive at this footbridge marking the trailhead of Middle Prong Trail. It also marks the end of Lynn Camp Prong, which, when merged with Thunderhead Prong (unseen, this side and right of the footbridge), becomes Middle Prong Little River, shown here.

I took this photograph yesterday evening, two hours after rain and while (carefully) standing on a broad, moss-covered rock in the river.

Cascading Beauty

Water flows in cascades over and around mossy rocks lining the gorge which houses Lynn Camp Prong, in the Smoky Mountains. Areas such as this are somewhat difficult to access, though convey an outstanding beauty far in excess of efforts expended to enjoy.

Chute of Water

More specifically, this is the upper half of Lower Lynn Camp Falls, a beautiful waterfall situated along Lynn Camp Prong in the Tremont section of the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee.

Mountain Hike

Shadows grow to consume the valley before sunset, as I approached the terminus of Thunderhead Prong Quiet Walkway. At this time of day, distant stumps in the forest begin to take the shape of bears, and sudden sounds are perceived with a heightened sense of interest. I’m aware that this trail is only hiked infrequently, and that I’m all alone in nature.

This is Thunderhead Prong in the Smoky Mountains, where the trail meets the waterway, at left, and a rocky incline, at right, becomes too steep to proceed.

Into the Gorge

It was late afternoon in the Smoky Mountains as I was hiking back along Middle Prong Trail, glancing downhill at Lynn Camp Prong as I progressed. Given no recent rainfall to preclude reasonably safe efforts of descent to access the river, below, and largely indirect light from a sun somewhat low in the sky, I was optimistic about undertaking one last off trail excursion to capture the beauty of nature.

Per my standard cautious and methodical approach, I selected a route to make my way down into the gorge, pleased to discover this serene, secluded spot, from which I now share my photography.

Comprised of two parts – Upper Lynn Camp Falls and Lower Lynn Camp Falls – this popular waterfall in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee offer visitors a picturesque and peaceful experience. Located in the Tremont section, the hike to the falls is only approx. 1/2 mile from the trailhead of Middle Prong Trail.
