Upper Piney Falls
Here’s another view of Upper Piney Falls, an 80-foot waterfall located in Grandview, Tennessee, at the Piney Falls State Natural Area. Following recent rainfall, every surface within the gorge was wet, including this steep hillside of lush foliage.

Upper Piney Falls
Located on the Cumberland Plateau in Grandview, Tennessee, the Piney Falls State Natural Area is home to Upper Piney Falls, a scenic 80-foot tall waterfall.
Though the moderately difficult hike is designed as a loop, most visitors prefer to stay left at the split and make this a 2.5 mile out and back trail, rather than follow the loop and rely on a loose cable to navigate steep hillsides. The parking is limited & dogs (leashed) are welcome. No restrooms on site.

Similar to other areas, it’s possible to walk behind and around the waterfall, and people often enjoy cooling off in the plunge pool. There is also a separate trail which leads to the upper section of Lower Piney Falls, a 40-foot waterfall.

Conasauga Waterfall
Visible upstream in the distance is the 30-foot tall Conasauga Falls, a scenic waterfall near Tellico Plains, Tennessee. I took this photograph from across the creek, which is only possible during seasonally low water-levels.

Thunderhead Prong
In the Tremont section of the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee, beyond the gravel road and across a foot bridge near the trailhead of Middle Prong Trail, hikers can keep to the right to follow Thunderhead Prong Quiet Walkway.
This trail is less commonly hiked, though offers several beautiful areas with easy access along Thunderhead Prong. Case in point, this photograph was taken approx. 1.5 hours after sunrise, as sunlight crested mountain tops from the east, filtering through sparse clouds into the forest to illuminate an area of trees.

Water and Rocks
