Water ripples on Richland Creek amidst a rocky gorge embankment, located along the Laurel-Snow Trail in Dayton, Tennessee. It’s one of my favorite places to hike, featuring a diverse array of waterfalls, creekside beauty and tall cliffs.

While hiking the Laurel-Snow Trail in Dayton, Tennessee, morning sunlight crested the high gorge, streaming into the forest upon this historic setting. Over one hundred years ago, the Dayton Coal & Iron Company operated mines in this area, from which industrial vestiges remain. In time, the business closed pursuant to an accident in which many miners perished. Today, voices from the past echo through canyon walls, as conveyed to me by an elderly Park Ranger on site.

Rocks, rocks and more rocks. This is Richland Creek, located along the Laurel-Snow Trail in Dayton, Tennessee, photographed in July 2020 without water. Leaving the Laurel-Snow Trail to climb a hill and step into the forest, I stepped back in time 100 years. At that time and earlier, the Dayton Coal & Iron Company had a mining operation at this Dayton, Tennessee location, along Richland Creek. Now, when exploring off the beaten trail, hikers can observe structural vestiges of that era, as seen in these photographs:

Located in a gorge along Richland Creek in Dayton, Tennessee, the Laurel-Snow Trail provides hikers with many scenic landscapes, waterfalls and rocky waterways. During the early 1900’s, the area was home to the Dayton Coal & Iron Company, with many remnants from that era still intact today – mine shafts, arches, retaining walls, structural supports of old railways, etc..
The park also has many massive rocks scattered along the creek, including this 40-foot tall boulder (see photograph). Though the water was low during my recent visit, this affords one the opportunity to more closely explore the creek bed. If you haven’t hiked this area, you really should check it out…there’s so much to see!

Located in Dayton, Tennessee, adjacent to the Laurel-Snow Trail on the Cumberland Plateau, hiking the gorge at Paine Creek provides visitors several scenic cliffs. This waterfall along Paine Creek is an obscure, though beautiful, sight for hikers to enjoy. It’s located on the Cumberland Plateau in Dayton, Tennessee, along an offshoot path from the Laurel-Snow Trail, which parallels Richland Creek. You’ll climb uphill, over structural remnants from historic mining operations, along rock faces, down to Paine Creek and then back up again, and traverse a 2-foot wide mountainside pathway, ending with a descent into the creek bed of an upper gorge. Interestingly, during periods of average water volume, the creek disappears entirely under a rock ledge, drains into a mineshaft underfoot (under rock), and flows back out as another smaller waterfall downstream. One of my favorites places to hike is the Laurel-Snow Trail in Dayton, Tennessee. In addition to Richland Creek, there are many side trails to explore, including this remote 15-foot tall waterfall along Paine Creek. It’s off the beaten trail and provides hikers with a scenic and peaceful respite. Richland Creek
Photographed along the Laurel-Snow Trail in Dayton, Tennessee, this may appear to be several small rocks in a creek. However, the larger rock (at top) is approx. 6-feet wide by 8-feet tall, with a length of 12-feet….a boulder!
Prints available. Located in the Laurel-Snow State Natural Area, near Dayton, Tennessee, Richland Creek provides visitors with scenic, peaceful surroundings. Hikers can discover boulders as large as 50-feet, a series of small and large waterfalls, and also historic remnants over 100 years old from the Dayton Coal & Iron Company.
