From the Cumberland Mountain State Park, a 1,720-acre park located on the Cumberland Plateau in Tennessee (formed as a New Deal-era initiative by the Resettlement Administration), this photograph features a view looking through the Byrd Lake Bridge Dam. The light on the ceiling is a reflection off of the lake, and, in the distance, a structure housing the Homestead Harvest Restaurant is visible. The parks best-known landmark is the Byrd Lake Bridge Dam, an unsuspended structure built for the impoundment of Byrd’s Creek by the Civilian Conservation Corps, Company 3464. Completed in 1938, the bridge dam is faced with Crab Orchard stone – a colorful sandstone unique to the area and found in only one other part of the world – and forms a beautiful 35-acre lake.
